Population density is a measure of the geographic distribution of population throughout the region. This is a very important factor in future development as dense population spreads to surrounding areas.

The map to the left illustrates the relative density of population measured in people per square mile with the least densely populated counties in shades of green and the highest densities indicated in red.

Penn State University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Rhode Island, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science are collaborating with the U.S. EPA and private and public stakeholders of the mid- and upper-Atlantic region.
