A physiographic province is an area delineated according to similar terrain that has been shaped by a common geologic history.  Each province defines a region in which relief, landforms, and geology are significantly different from that of the adjoining and nearby regions. The boundary between each province is determined by a major change in topography and geology.

The provinces delineated in the map to the left were defined by Fenneman and Johnson of the U.S. Geological Survey.
