Land cover can be described in many ways.  This map divides land cover into six categories.  Forests cover the largest share of land in the mid- and upper-Atlantic region, followed by agriculture and then developed land.  Wetlands and barren land account for only small shares at a region-wide scale. (Water covers a large share if portions of the Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean are included.)

Land cover can also be explored in the CaraViz application shows percentages of land in each category, across all counties in the mid- and upper-Atlantic region.
